Booth Labor, Freight, and Rigging

We’ve got three key player unions. First up, it’s the Teamsters Union taking charge of the freight game. They’re the muscle behind unloading trucks and ferrying materials to and from booths (that’s drayage lingo for you).

Next in line is the Carpenters Union, masters of exhibit erection and dismantling. They can be snagged through the general contractor or an indie contractor like Momentum Management Inc. Carpenters unbox and rebox machinery, lay out all the pipe and drape, deck out the flooring (think carpeting), and assemble non-lighted signs.

Electrical

Last but not least, the Electrical Union steps in for all things electrical. From power lines to your booth to hooking up equipment and putting up lit signs or headers (unless they’re permanently attached to the exhibit back wall). Forget about laying your own internet wires or plugging into outlets; that’s their turf.

Now, if you’re rolling with a smaller booth (10×10 or less), and you can set it up in half an hour or less without tools, you can DIY. But there are some conditions: it has to be a quick setup, no tools involved, and the folks doing the work must be full-time employees of your company.

Flame Proofing

Quick side note on safety – everything from draping to tablecloths needs to be nonflammable and fire-resistant, meeting the New York Fire Department’s standards. If asked, be ready to provide affidavits confirming the flameproof compliance.
